Dear Friend of Ligstad

I re-discovered the joy of giving! The events of the past few weeks at Ligstad gave me this gift. I realized that we live in a consumer society where the aim is to see how much you can gather and receive in every situation you are in. Yes, we need things and the reality is that our behaviour is driven by our needs. We are easily caught in the trap of our selfish nature. But, when our focus is set on the happiness we get from what I receive, the happiness won’t last long. The long-lasting joy (and all its byproducts) settles in our hearts and spreads to every fibre of our being. We give because we have received. We received another day to make a difference in our world. We received health, stamina, our means and abilities, and many more to give to someone who needs me today. Just as I am. Without frills. The authentic me who are here right now in this very moment to give what I have to give right now. It may be a smile or a word of encouragement. Most of the time they might only need my presence to get them through a tough spot. Even while we receive we can give.  We give our gratitude. We give hope. The receiver gives the giver the necessary encouragement to keep on giving. Giver and receiver continuously change roles. We often deprive ourselves the opportunity to receive due to our pride standing in the way. God loves to bless us through someone else’s gift to us. I received so much the past few weeks by serving others. At the Street Store, in my office, at the retirement village our GiG seniors reached out to and while we were painting little ones’ faces at the “basaar” of Alberton West.  I am richer because I gave away. My prayer is that you may discover this truth too.

Ligstad greetings
