Our dedicated team offers personalized care and social interaction for lonely seniors, creating a ‘home away from home’ where they can connect with peers and enjoy special moments.
The group meet on Friday mornings 10:00 till 12:00 under the capable leadership of a team of volunteers. The purpose of the group is firstly, to fulfil in the social needs of lonely seniors. Secondly, they have an opportunity to become involved in each other’s lives and has the opportunity to actively contribute to their community, having a purpose in life that strengthen their dignity. They are also cared for spiritually and the volunteers have the opportunity to pro-actively establish their needs. Any senior is welcome to join.
Many seniors do not have their own transport anymore and their children lives far away. Their support systems decreases through the years as their peers pass away. Co-operating with AMCARE, Ligstad renders a service where seniors are taken for shopping once a month with Ligstad’ s bus taking them and AMCARE’s minibuses taking them home after the shopping. This happens on the first Wednesday of each month.
Some of the seniors also need to visit doctors and clinics. They phone Ligstad and arrange transport. Ligstad has a few volunteers who focus on transport and they take responsibility for this service.
We observe more and more that Ligstad’ s seniors are getting more frail leading to them not being able to attend meetings at Ligstad. The Ligstad Angels is a team of volunteers who make it their mission to do home visits at these seniors in order to address their needs as well.

By die ligstad GIG kan ons saamkuier en gesels en bid vir mekaar en deel wees van n omgee familie.

Ligstad is a beacon of light in a poverty ravished community. A place where the most vulnerable and sometimes the very lonely can come for some love, guidance and fellowship. It is also where the elderly can come to enjoy praise and worship as well as a chat and advice. To me it means an avenue where I can express my creative abilities and organisational skills during the Street Store and Street Shower projects. The venue is generously provided to hold the Lions Bright Sight clinic every couple of months. Ligstad also has a Preschool and Aftercare facility, which help to assists and uplifts the community further. You can be a part of the events as much or as little as you wish. I was introduced to GIG through a friend. What a warm welcome I received at my first meeting. Folk were friendly & made me feel very at home. I find that starting our time together with scripture & a message is so important – Alida & Peter are both amazing & I admire them so much. We have fun at our meetings & I have made some very special friends. What a wonderful ministry.
